FFA Legal Counsel

Football Federation Australia (FFA) is responsible for the organisation, promotion and administration of football in Australia including the Australian national teams as well as the Hyundai A-League, Westfield W-League and Westfield FFA Cup.

Based in Sydney, this is an exciting opportunity to join the world game and to work in an exciting and dynamic collegiate in-house environment. 

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Legal, Business Affairs and Integrity, the position will work generally across the commercial and regulatory practice areas of FFA’s business, including:

  • Commercial contracting in the field of sponsorship, licensing, digital and IT, marketing, servicing and event organisation;
  • Advising on intellectual property and privacy issues;
  • Assisting on the drafting and formulation of competition regulations and policies;
  • Advising on the application of the FIFA and FFA Statutes to FFA’s Member Federations and Clubs, Players and Officials participating in FFA’s national leagues and national teams;
  • Assisting with the administration of the national grievance and disciplinary systems and servicing of the independent judicial bodies of the FFA;
  • Assisting with the delivery of education sessions to Clubs, Players and Officials participating in FFA’s national leagues;
  • Providing ad hoc advice and support to various FFA business units including league operations, digital, commercial and community; and
  • Assisting the FFA Integrity Unit.

Essential Skills & Experience Required

The role will suit one lawyer with 4-6 years post qualification experience.  The structure of the team is currently being reviewed which may result in an additional role becoming available for a lawyer with 2-4 years’ post qualification experience.  The successful applicant(s) will require:

  • Excellent drafting skills;
  • Prior exposure to IP and privacy law issues;
  • Understanding of the operation of sporting tribunals;
  • A strong work ethic, flexibility and the ability to juggle numerous tasks under pressure;
  • Integrity and excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to develop solid relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • A strong track record in being a team player;
  • An ability to work autonomously as part of a small in-house legal team;
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong time management skills;
  • An ability to communicate clearly and succinctly.

Private practice and/or in-house experience in sports or entertainment will be viewed favourably.
